Steps:

  1. See the diagram for starting positions. The objective of this drill is to work on creating scoring opportunities from a cross. It simulates the outside back playing into the forward for a layoff to the midfielder and then a through-ball to the wide mid for a cross.
  2. The drill starts with the right back passing the ball into the forward (#1). To make it game-like the right mid should check to the ball as the right back is passing it so that space is created in behind for the through-ball. As the ball is passed into the forward the right mid should spin out and make a run down line.
  3. At this moment the ball should be passed back by the forward to the center mid (#2) and then passed by the center mid into the wide space for the right mid to run onto (#3).
  4. Depending on the through ball, the right mid can deliver a cross first time or take a touch and then cross (#4). The forwards must time their runs and finish all crosses. The center mid can also join in the box and look to score crosses that are cut back.
  5. Both teams can attack at the same time and compete for most goals. Players rotate to each position and repeat.

Setup:

  • 12 or more players.
  • Set of balls, 3 cones.
  • 2 goals.

Variations:

  • To add difficulty you can defenders in the box or passive defenders at each position.
  • The pass into the forward and through to the right mid can be made in the air.

Tips:

  • Start off slow and build up the speed of play. Before you add defenders all passes and runs should be executed quickly and at game speed without errors.
