Steps:

  1. Defenders lineup on the side of the goal with all the balls while the attackers form one line just in front of half field. The target forward and defender start at the top of the box.
  2. The drill starts with the second defender in line sending a long ball to the second attacker.
  3. The second attacker collects the ball and works with the target forward to score. The target forward should create space with check and go runs and support the second attacker. This should simulate a midfielder and forward working together to score. The coach should call offsides to make it game realistic.
  4. The defender and goalkeeper must communicate well and work together to limit passing and shooting angles. If the attackers do well, the best the defense can hope for is a poor shooting angle that the goalkeeper has a better chance of saving.

Setup:

  • 4 or more Players (2 Attackers, 1 Defender, 1 Goalkeeper)
  • Set of balls.

Tips:

  • This drill forces players to make various attacking and defending choices. The second attacker must read the target forwards runs and decide to when to dribble or pass. The defender must read the attackers and decide if they are going to dribble or pass and when they can tackle or intercept. The target forward must be good at holding the ball with pressure from behind and use lots of check an go runs to create space.
