Steps:

  1. Place a goalkeeper in goal. Position four defenders (red) across the field at the edge of the penalty area. Place four attackers (blue) at the half way line.
  2. The play begins when the attacker (blue) on the left side of the field passes the ball to the right back. Once the right back receives the ball, the two attackers (blue) on the left side pressure that right back and try to win the ball. The defender (red) is trying to keep possession of the ball while he is under pressure.
  3. The defender (red) can pass the ball to any of his other defenders or goalkeeper. Once four passes have been made, the defenders (red) try to play the ball out of the back to one of the two remaining attackers (blue). Once the play is completed, the drill then begins again from the right side.

Variations:

  • Half a field with one goal and a goal keeper.
  • 9 players: (4 attackers (blue), 4 defenders (red), 1 goalkeeper)
  • Limit the defenders to two touches.
  • Add in a third pressurizing defender.

Tips:

  • Play smart and firm passes in the back. Don’t put any of your defenders in trouble by playing the “hospital” ball.
  • Drive the ball with pace across the field when switching the ball. (Switching - playing the ball from one side of the field to the other)
  • One of the central defenders should look to receive the ball when the two attackers are pressuring.
  • Play the ball wide to try to stretch the pressuring attackers. This will make it easy to play the ball out of the back without turning it over.
