Steps:

  1. The attackers (red) start off with the ball on the end line and the defenders (yellow) starts off facing the attackers (red). The first defender (yellow) pressuring the first attacker (red) with the ball should be 1-2 yards away from the attacker (red). The second defender (yellow) should be facing the second attacker (red) with out the ball about 3-4 yards away.
  2. Play beings as the first attacker (red) starts to run toward the defender (yellow) with the ball. The first attacker (red) with the ball should dribble the ball a few steps forward and then pass it to the second attacker (red). At this point, the defenders (yellow) need to take the correct defensive positioning. Once the first attacker (red) passes the ball off, the first defender (yellow) should now back off a few yards, and once that second attacker (red) receives the ball, the second defender (yellow) should close down that player and only be 1-2 yards away.
  3. Reverse roles once you reach the end line.

Setup:

  • Set up a grid 15x40 yards
  • 4 players: (2 attackers (red), 2 defenders (yellow))

Variations:

  • Increase the speed of play.

Tips:

  • First defender – The player nearest to the ball is the first defender. That player should always keep a distance of 1-2 yards from the attacker.
  • Second Defender – This player is adding cover and helping maintain the defensive shape. The second defender should keep 3-4 yards back from the attacker without the ball. This player should be in a position to support the first defender and pressure the other attacker when they receive the ball.
  • When defending, bend your knees and keep your body low, feet in a staggered stance (one leg behind the other), and stay on the balls of your feet. This will allow you the change direction quickly.
  • The defenders should adjust their position as the ball travels between the attackers.
