Overview of a 3-5-2 Formation

Coaching Articles - Team Tactics

Deciding which formation to use for your team depends on many factors. There is not any one formation that is necessarily better then another nor is there any formation that is perfect for all teams. A coach has the responsibility of accessing:

- The strengths and weaknesses of their players
- The strengths and weaknesses of the opposition
- The number of players at each position that are available
- The situation in the game (winning, losing, or drawing)
- Whether you are playing at home or away

Be careful not to over analyze the situation and go with a formation that will not confuse your players. Too much change can make it hard for players to adapt but it is good to be able to change up your tactics from time to time given the situation the team is in.

A 3-5-2 formation consists of 3 defenders, 5 midfielders, and 2 forwards. This formation is for teams looking to use their advantage in the middle to attack and defend. It also adapts to most playing styles but does really well with teams looking to exploit the flanks. As you can see in the figure below this formation is vulnerable in the wide areas of the defensive third but very strong throughout the middle third.

This formation works well when you have:

- An abundance of good midfielders and a lack of defenders
- Defenders with very good 1v1 skills and are athletic (fast, strong in the air)
- Creative attacking midfielder(s)
- Good defensive midfielder(s)
- Wide midfielders who are athletic (endurance running) and posses good 1v1 and crossing skills.
- Creative forwards

Defenders in a 3-5-2

The back three defenders must be able to work as one unit to mark the two strikers while helping to cover the space behind the wide midfielders. Each defender must be a good communicator to ensure that the team shape is maintained. Because there is only a one player advantage (sometimes there is no advantage when teams play with 3 forwards) the three defenders have to be very good at marking, shifting, tackling, winning head balls, and reading the game to cover any weak spots.

While attacking the 3-5-2 formation does not safely allow for the defenders to attack but with good shifting from the far side outside midfielders the outside defender can sometimes join into the attack.

Midfielders in a 3-5-2

The advantage of a 3-5-2 is the extra player in midfield. The midfielders will have an easier job of controlling the middle in both both attack and defense because of this. Since there is a numerical advantage the midfielders should look to close down as many passing lanes as possible and make it difficult for the forwards to receive balls to their feet. The wide midfielders must help cover the space behind them since that is the weak area of a 3-5-2. While attacking, the midfielders must work together to keep possession when advancing the ball up field and try to get the opposing midfielders stretched out. This will open up passing lanes for the team to exploit. It is important for the central midfielders to maintain shape while attacking so that the three defenders are not left without cover.

Forwards in a 3-5-2

There basic responsibilities of a forward will apply in a 3-5-2. The forwards must be able to work as a unit both defensively and offensively to create chances for their team. Each forward must work together to create space and open up passing lanes to create scoring opportunities. Since there are more players in the midfield there is less space for the forwards to work in. A bit of creativity and interchanging between either forward and an attacking midfielder should help to offset the defense. Some teams use one taller target forward in combination with a speedy striker in a 3-5-2 system. This tandem provides teams with both an aerial presence in the box for crosses as well as speed for long balls over the top of the defense.
