1v1 Team Possession Drill Diagram
Steps:
- The game is played using a half field space but can be adjusted for the number of players or skill level. See diagram.
- Two teams play a normal game of possession accept each player can only defend one player the entire time. The only player that can tackle or defend the player in possession of the ball is the defender for that player. Pair players with similar physical and technical abilities if possible.
- To score a point teams must complete 5-10 passes depending on skill level. Play for 2 minute intervals as players will fatigue quickly.
- Encourage players to lose their defenders and make them work hard to stay marked. To work on fitness you can require each player to keep jogging throughout the entire interval. Keep an eye out for any player that is walking and encourage them to start jogging.
- To make things interesting the coach can call the ball dead and play another ball into the grid for players to use or better yet add a second ball into the grid. This will keep players alert and allow you to serve balls to players who are less involved in the game and provide them with a chance to lose their markers.
Setup:
- Half Field space or less
- 2 teams of 6 or more.
- Set of balls.
Variations:
- None
Tips:
- Encourage players to use change of direction and speed to lose their markers to open up space.
- Players should look to beat their defender 1v1 so that they will be free to make an easy pass without pressure.
