Chip Pass

Ball Control Drills - Passing Drills
Saturday, 08 December 2007

Steps:

The chip pass is used when you need to lob the ball over your opponent to another teammate. A good chip pass will have backspin rotation which makes the ball land softly so that it is easy for your teammate to trap. Steps:

  1. Positioning: Start at a slight angle to the ball.
  2. Approach: Your approach to the ball will vary based on the type of pass being made.
  3. Alignment: Your body and plant foot should be pointed in the direction that you want to pass. Place your plant foot even with the ball at a distance of 6-8 inches and keep your plant leg bent. Lock your ankle in an up position (90 Degrees) with your kicking leg bent. Use your arms for balance and lean slightly back. Keep your eyes focused on the ball.
  4. Contact: Swing your leg forward at the knee and wedge your toe beneath the ball. You are aiming for the ground underneath the middle of the ball.
  5. After Contact: Swing your kicking leg straight through the ball towards your target while keeping your foot at 90 degrees. You will have little to no follow through on this type of shot.

Tips:

  • Your foot will act as a wedge to make the ball rise immediately following contact. Remember to keep your eyes focused on the ball.
