Preparation for practice is a major responsibility for all coaches. Good planning and organization makes practice flow better and allows players to focus on learning. Players can tell when a coach is unorganized and this makes it more difficult for coaches earn the respect of their players. The following should be considered when preparing for a practice.

Facilities

Where are the fields located? How much of the field are you able to use? What is the quality of the field? Do you have the use of full size goals? In case of thunder or rain, is there adequate shelter for the players?

All the these should be considered by the coach when confirming the use of a field. It is important that the environment the players are playing in is adequate for their skill level and age group.

Practice Plan

One of the easiest ways to make practice as productive as possible is to have a plan prepared beforehand. A coach should come up with a theme for each practice and drills that work on the topic of the day. Each drill should be as game realistic as possible and instruction must be given to correct any mistakes. It is sometimes difficult to come up with a practice plan if you are unsure of the number of players so it is advisable to have a few back up drills in case one drill does not work with the available players.

Equipment

Each player should bring their own ball to practice and have the correct safety equipment. A coach must ensure this by checking that each players has the proper cleats, shin guards, and clothing before each practice. Players without the proper equipment should not be allowed to participate.

A coach also has to be prepared by bringing the following items:

Balls:
Should be positioned in such a way to limit the time spent recovering them.

Cones:
Used to section off parts of the field and give direction to the players movements.

Training Vests:
Used to distinguish teams. Remember to wash them after each practice.

Stop Watch:
To keep time during games and drills.

Whistle:
To easily start and stop practice when necessary.

Medical Kit:
In case of an injury.
