Steps:

  1. The attacker (yellow) starts off with the ball on the end line and the defender (blue) starts off facing the attacker between 1-2 yards away.
  2. The play begins as the attacker (yellow) starts to dribble to ball forward. The defender (blue) must retreat and stay a distance of 1-2 yards away from the attacker (yellow) at all times. As the attacker (yellow) dribbles, moving from right to left, the defender (blue) retreats maintaining his defensive positioning and changing his body position based on the attacker (yellow). There is no tackling in the drill.
  3. Once both players reach the end line the roles are reversed.

Setup:

  • Set up a grid 10x20 yards
  • 2 players: (1 attacker (yellow), 1 defender (blue))

Variations:

  • Increase the speed of play

Tips:

  • When defending, bend your knees and keep your body low, feet in a staggered stance (one leg behind the other), and stay on the balls of your feet. This will allow you the change direction quickly.
