Steps:

  1. This drill is played in and around the penalty box area. Two crossers occupy the flank space and provide crosses for the attacker while one server is at the top of the box for support. See diagram.
  2. In the diagram the yellow players are the attackers and the red player is the defender. The yellow players outside the box must work with the yellow player inside the box to create scoring opportunities but only the player in the box can score. Each player must stay in their respective zones.
  3. The drill starts with a pass from the server at the top of the box into the attacker. From their the attacker has the option to play with either of the supporting players or try to score off of the dribble. Supporting players may play to other supporting players to encourage runs off of different passes. Play continues until the ball is cleared, scored, or saved by the goalkeeper.
  4. Each attacker gets 3-5 balls to score before players rotate and switch roles.

Setup:

  • Penalty box area.
  • 5 or more players. 1 goalkeeper.
  • 1 large goal.

Variations:

  • You can limit the amount touches available to each supporting player to increase the speed of play and thought.

Tips:

  • Encourage players to make quick, sharp runs to lose the defender, combine with the supporting players and take shots.
  • Supporting players can also move along their zone to provide better supporting angles.
  • Encourage the defender to stay tight and not let the attacker get any easy chances. The goalkeeper should also communicate with the defender to help close down shooting angles.
