Reaction Finishing 3
Thursday, 20 March 2008
This is a great finishing drill that forces players into a 1v1 situation where the attacker must dribble quickly to take advantage of space and the defender must react and recover to close down shooting angles.

Steps:
- Two keepers, one goal, one ball, and two shooters set up using the diagram above.
- The first player from each team comes out to the center and pass the ball back and forth using one touch.
- On the coach's call "attack", the player in possession decides to attack one of the goals. Once the ball has crossed the line and gone in the direction of one of the goals the player in possession cannot switch to the other goal.
- The other player immediately acts as a defender and now a 1v1 game commences until a goal is scored or the ball leaves the pitch. If the defender steals the ball they become the attacker and try to score.
- The keepers must react to the attackers decision and be ready to assist the defender in stopping the attack. Communication is key in helping the defender cut down shooting angles. The keeper must also be prepared to come off the line to make saves.
- Players receive 3 points for a goal. Two teams compete against each other to a set amount of points.
- Repeat these steps with two new players.
Setup:
- 4 or more players (2 shooters, 2 goalies).
- Set of balls, 2 cones.
- 2 goals.
Variations:
- To add difficulty players can juggle the ball back and forth instead of one touch passing.
Tips:
- The attacker should use faints and fakes to disguise which direction he intends to attack. The attacker should also dribble with speed and use moves to open up shooting angles.
- The defender must react quickly to close down the attacker and use good 1v1 defending techniques to dispossess the attacker.
