Dribbling Number Cones
Dribbling Number Cones Drill Diagram

Steps:

  1. The diagram above shows the setup for just one player but the drill can be expanded for multiple players.
  2. The drill starts with one player in the center of the grid with a ball doing toe touches or just moving the back and forth.
  3. Each cone represents a number that the player must dribble around when instructed to do so by the coach. In the example above the coach has said cones 1, and 4. The player must then dribble around the 1st cone, the 4th cone and then back to the middle before dribbling with speed to the finish line. The only rule to follow is that each player must dribble back to the middle before going to the next cone.
  4. The objective for this drill is to achieve close dribbling control with speed. Players should be encouraged to focus on control first and then progress to dribbling faster and faster. Eventually you can have the players compete against each other.
  5. The coach should start out saying only one number and then progress to combining 2,3, and all 4 numbers. The coach can also force players to use specfic surfaces of the foot (i.e. left foot only, rolls only, etc)

Setup:

  • 1 player per grid.
  • 1 ball per player, 6 cones per grid.

Variations:

  • Vary the cones each player has to dribble. Keep them off guard to work on their reaction speed.
  • Require each player to dribble a certain way. (i.e. left foot only, right foot only, rolls only, etc).
  • Competition: each round is a race to the finish. See who is the fastest dribbler.

Tips:

  • Review the basics of dribbling in our drills archive.. This drill works on the fundamentals and coaches should encourage players to focus on close control over wild speed.
  • Make the drill as specific as you can to force players to use their weak foot.
