Steps:

  1. The object of this drill is for players to start off by dribbling around in the grid. Once the coach blows the whistle and yells out a skill, the players execute that skill until they are told to stop. (Usually about 20-30 seconds) Skills: Push-Pull-Inside-- Push the ball forward and pull it back with the sole of the foot while turning and then take the ball with the inside of the same foot. Push-Pull-Outside-- Push the ball forward and pull the ball back with the sole then touch the ball to the outside with the outside of the same foot. Pull turn --Touch ball forward with one foot and pull it back with the other while turning toward ball and take the ball in the opposite direction with the inside or outside of the first foot. Inside of foot cut -- Push ball forward, move past ball and turn toward ball and take it with the inside of the foot in the opposite direction. Outside of foot cut -- Push ball forward, move past ball and turn toward ball while taking it with the outside of the foot in the opposite direction.

Setup:

  • Set up a grid, the size of the grid will be based on the number of players you have
  • 20x20 yards recommended for 10-12 players

Tips:

  • Coaches Points: Once you get comfortable, try to keep your head up so you can see where you are going and you are not running into other players.
  • You should try to make every step you take a touch on the ball.
  • These drills are very helpful to train your feet and improve on your touch as well as learning new ways to control the ball.
  • These kinds of footwork drills are very important in order to build a good technical foundation as a player.
