Description

I think the video does well to analyze the goal. Iniesta takes advantage of poor defending by the Russians to spring Villa for his second goal. What I see from the Russians is a lot of ball watching, no commitment to pressure the ball and poor marking. The three players surrounding the ball let Iniesta have too much space and time on the ball while the center defenders ball watch and lose sight of David Villa's run. The first defender needed to step up and pressure Iniesta so that he puts his head down and hopefully have one of the trailing midfielders tackle from the side. He has support so their is no reason to drop off. The center defenders needed to communicate with each other so that one of them was marking Villa tightly. Runs in behind the defense are hard to defend but the far side defender can see the run and should communicate with the other defender or run with him. In the end Iniesta shows how easy it is to break down six defenders with only two attackers and perfectly timed runs.
