Cristiano Ronaldo Freekick Technique

Description
Cristiano Ronaldo's freekick is somewhat unconventional because he is able to combine a power freekick with a swerving freekick. Usually freekicks have one of these characteristics not both. From the beginning you can see his approach to the ball is very unique. He is not as far as you would think for a power shot (like Roberto Carlos) and his run up is basically straight on (atypical of a swerve shot). I think the key here is how quickly he is able to swing his leg before striking the ball and where he places his foot at contact. His back swing is very quick (which generates the power) and his foot strikes the ball from the bottom to the top in one quick motion (which creates lift and topspin). He finishes with a short follow through and a small hop and lands on his kicking foot. The quick back swing and short follow through allows him to create optimal force and dip on the ball. Obviously Ronaldo has spent countless hours practicing his freekicks and I encourage you to do the same. Pause the video at each point and see if you can master his freekick. Good Luck!| < Prev | Next > |
