Check off Runs in the Box

Description
A lot of players learn how to make near and far post runs in the box for a cross and for defenders it can become predictable and easy to defend. One way to mix things up is to check off your run and look for a cut back cross. The video above gives you one example of this type of run. It's a simple technique to use but difficult to defend. The forward for Liverpool is anticipating a cross from his left mid and makes a near post run. The defender does a good job to stay infront of him, so instead of continuting the run he checks off right before the cross is made. The timing is perfect because the defender has to see the ball and assumes the forwards is still running. When the cross is made its too late to recover and the Liverpool forwards scores and easy goal. This works especially well when the crossers gets to the endline near the goal (as in this case) and there is little space to slot a pass. It also works well when the defender is over-playing the run and its nearly impossible to regain positioning. See if you can use this in your next practice or game. If you have any questions or comments leave them below and I will respond.Jamil
