This week we are going to go over many different attacking combinations that you can use during a game. The first combo is a simple third man run which is a great tactic to use to create space and scoring opportunities. Third man run #1 is shown below:

Description

The passing sequence begins when the 1st forward makes a checking run towards the right mid (or defender) that has the ball. The opposing teams' defender, reacting to this run, follows the first attacker which then opens up space for the 2nd forward. The right mid then passes the ball to the 1st forward (Red #1) who then passes the ball back to the right mid (Red #2). As the second pass is being made the 2nd forward starts to make a diagonal run (Yellow #3) into the space left by the 1st forward. This movement should trigger the right mid to see the pass (Red #3) that should be made in behind the defense (in the air or on the ground). I say 'trigger' because it's up to the forward to initiate the run so that the passer can see it as an option. The use of hand gestures pointing to the passing lane as well as verbal communication such as "through" will also help with the timing of the pass. The 2nd forward must be careful not to initiate the run too early so that they stay on-sides.

This attacking combo is very simple but very effective. Usually the 2nd forward is the faster of the two forwards while the first forward is a better target forward. If timed correctly this combo will create many 1 on 1 opportunities for your team. All it takes is a little practice on timing between the forwards and the passers. Try it out in your next practice or game.

Good luck!
